Galerie Elektra has been on Bridgeway since 1998, founded by its owner, Elektra, to bring original art into everyday living spaces. The collection is original oil paintings and sculpture by contemporary artists from around the world, and the gallery's own site lists names such as Rozer, Rossi, Kristian, J Carlos, Vargas, Shadi, Tike and Davida Bushner. The look leans toward bolder color and form than the more traditional galleries around it, so this is where you go when the seascape-and-sailboat school of Sausalito art isn't what you're after. The gallery recently marked its 25th anniversary, which makes it one of the longer-running independents on the strip, and it keeps later hours than almost anything else downtown.
What To Expect
Expect a wide range of styles and subjects from international artists under one roof, with oil paintings on the walls and sculpture on the floor. The gallery does not post prices on its homepage, so ask at the desk or send an inquiry. Two services are worth knowing about. The gallery offers a complimentary Photoshop preview, where you send a photo and dimensions of your wall and it shows the painting in your space. It also provides free art advisory, and it ships internationally, so a purchase doesn't have to fit in your carry-on.
Getting There
The gallery is on Bridgeway close to Hanson Gallery Fine Art, and both are an easy walk from the ferry landing. The address is 705 Bridgeway. The Sausalito Center for the Arts is another few blocks north if you're building a full gallery walk. Either way you'll be in the main gallery stretch, with Daniel Merriam Gallery and Hanson only a few minutes apart on foot.
Good To Know
The gallery says it is open seven days a week, but its own pages disagree about closing time. The homepage says noon to 9 p.m. and the about page says noon to 8, so treat it as a place that is open into the evening and check before a late visit. Call (415) 331-3332 if the timing matters. It is one of the few gallery doors still open after most restaurants have seated their dinner crowd.
