Founder Yoshi Tome took over this spot on Caledonia Street roughly forty years ago, and it's been genuinely destination-worthy ever since. The wine and sake list is built to match the kitchen rather than as an afterthought, and the restaurant carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand along with a spot on the SF Chronicle's list of the 30 most important Bay Area restaurants of the last three decades. Many of the region's sushi chefs trained under Tome, which explains some of the reputation. It's the rare restaurant in Sausalito that people drive up from the city for specifically, rather than stumbling onto during a day trip. The address is 107 Caledonia Street, a block off Bridgeway.
Atmosphere
Quiet and serious about the food, tucked a block off Bridgeway on Caledonia, at a different pace from the waterfront tourist crowd. The Michelin Guide describes a beachside-bungalow ambience with attentive service and a carefully chosen sake selection. The dining room is understated rather than flashy, which fits a restaurant that would rather let the fish speak for itself than lean on decor. A pleasant back patio is available in good weather.
What To Order
Executive Chef Takanori Wada, known as Chef Taka, runs the kitchen now, and the a la carte nigiri list alone is strong enough to build a meal around. If you want the full experience, the omakase is the splurge, and it books up far ahead, so reserve it early or ask what is available. Trust the staff's recommendations on what's freshest rather than defaulting to the same rolls every visit. Pair the fish with something from the sake list; the servers will steer you if you tell them what you like. Online ordering exists for takeout, but the room is the point.
Good To Know
Reservations are close to essential, so book well ahead, ideally a couple of weeks out for a weekend. Lunch runs Thursday through Sunday, 12 to 2:30, and dinner is Sunday through Thursday 5 to 9:30 and Friday and Saturday until 10. Street parking on Caledonia is limited, but there is a lot behind the restaurant reached from Pine Street, which is worth knowing before you circle the block. Sushi Ran is a step up in price from the casual counters on Bridgeway, so plan accordingly and check the current menu.
Our Take
One of the best sushi restaurants in Marin County and worth the trip on its own, separate from any other plans downtown. Splurge on the omakase at least once rather than treating this as a quick sushi stop, and book it before you buy your ferry ticket.
