A French bistro set inside a renovated former auto shop at Schoonmaker Point Marina, with a waterside patio that's one of the more romantic seats in town once the weather cooperates. Corrugated steel and two big garage doors give it away, and servers in auto-shop uniforms carry plates out to the breezy marina tables. The menu runs classic bistro, with steak frites, mussels, and a proper French onion soup, the kind of food that doesn't need reinventing and doesn't get it here. The high garage-door windows fold open on warm days, which blurs the line between the dining room and the deck outside. It sits in the Marinship district, the old World War II shipyard area, at 85 Liberty Ship Way.
Atmosphere
Industrial bones softened with bistro tables and string lights. The outdoor patio directly over the water is the draw when it's open, and even the indoor tables get a decent water view through the big windows. It's popular with the boating crowd from the adjacent marina, which gives it a slightly different energy than the tourist-heavy end of Bridgeway. Brunch is the relaxed version, with sun on the patio. Dinner is a notch more romantic once the marina lights come on, and the room tends to empty out earlier than downtown, since the kitchen closes around 8 or 8:30 on most nights.
What To Order
The moules et clams is the dish the menu itself calls out as the signature, and it comes in five preparations: classic marinière, a creamy poulette with bacon, bleu with blue cheese, a Basque version with tomato and chorizo, or a Thai take with lemongrass and coconut, all with house-made fries. The plate is priced in the mid-$20s on the current menu. Steak frites is the other order that a bistro either does well or doesn't bother having, and Le Garage does it well. Weekend brunch has its own menu, so check it before you go. Charcuterie boards suit a shared, no-fuss starter on the patio.
Good To Know
Patio seating is weather-dependent and fills first, so book ahead and ask specifically for the patio if a water view matters. An indoor table is a real fallback but not the same experience. Current hours run Monday through Thursday 11:30 to 8, Friday 11:30 to 8:30, and Saturday and Sunday for brunch from 10 to 2:30 plus dinner from 5. The restaurant is in Suite 109 in the Marinship area, a short drive or a longer walk from downtown Bridgeway. Our Take
A genuinely good French bistro in a converted boat garage is a very Sausalito combination, and it works better than it sounds on paper. Go on a warm evening when the garage doors are open and the patio is running at full capacity, and order the moules et clams so you can try one of the five sauces.
