Cavallo Point's more casual restaurant serves farm-focused small plates, local microbrews, and cocktails built around local botanicals. The resort describes it as an artful twist on farm-to-fork in a gastropub setting, with bay and Golden Gate Bridge views from both indoor tables and a terrace. Cavallo Point sits inside the old Fort Baker Army post, a converted 1900s military base at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, so the setting alone puts Farley in a different category from anything on Bridgeway. This is a former Army post with a lodge attached, not a storefront. Entrees run in the high teens to high thirties by the resort's own menu range, which is fair for a room this well placed.
Atmosphere
Relaxed lodge-bar energy, with a fireplace going in cooler months and a porch that puts the bridge practically overhead. Rocking chairs line the veranda for anyone waiting on a table, and the pace here runs slower than downtown Sausalito by design. Nobody is trying to turn tables fast at a resort restaurant. The terrace is the best seat on a clear evening, when the orange span of the bridge fills the sky above the deck. Inside, the room is warmer and quieter, and it suits a rainy afternoon well.
What To Order
The blue crab cake and the umami fries, made with porcini and truffle oil, are the small plates people order twice. The red mole beef short rib is worth it if you're hungrier than a small-plates crawl usually leaves you. On the drink side, order the Unsinkable Coffee, a signature cocktail built with chocolate liqueur from Sausalito Liquor down the hill, about as local as a cocktail gets. Microbrews and small-production wines round out the list. The kitchen runs separate lunch, dinner and weekend brunch menus, so check which one applies to your visit.
Good To Know
You don't need to be a hotel guest to eat here. Farley is open on a walk-in basis, and parties of six or more should call ahead at (415) 339-4751; a 20 percent gratuity is added automatically for those larger groups. Lunch runs 11:30 to 2 on weekdays, weekend brunch is 11 to 2, and the afternoon-and-evening Farley menu runs from 2 until 10 p.m., or 11 on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant occasionally closes for private events, so call if you are making a special trip. It's a drive or a longer walk from downtown Sausalito, about ten minutes by car from Bridgeway. Parking is free and plentiful at Cavallo Point itself, which isn't true of most Sausalito restaurants. The Bay Area Discovery Museum is also on the Fort Baker campus if you have kids in tow.
Our Take
The setting does a lot of the work. Few restaurants in Marin let you drink a beer with the Golden Gate Bridge this close overhead. Go for an early dinner in summer so you catch the light on the bridge before it fades, and pair it with a walk along the water at Fort Baker.
