The Inn Above Tide

Every one of the Inn Above Tide's 33 rooms and suites — spread across 16 different accommodation types, seven of them suites with spa tubs and fireplaces — sits directly over the water on a pier, with a private deck facing San Francisco, Alcatraz, and Angel Island across the bay. It's the only Sausalito hotel actually built out over the tide rather than just facing it, and the view is the entire point of a stay here.

Rooms & Amenities

Every room has a furnished private deck directly over the bay — this isn't a hotel where you upgrade for a view, the view is standard. Interiors run contemporary and understated, which keeps the focus on the window rather than the decor. There's no restaurant on-site, but rates include a continental breakfast each morning and an evening wine-and-cheese service delivered to the room, plus a free bike fleet for exploring town on two wheels. The top-tier suites stock Bulgari toiletries, and in-room massage is available most of the day if you'd rather not leave the deck at all.

Getting There

Set right next to the ferry landing on El Portal, this is about as close to zero-effort arrival as Sausalito lodging gets if you're coming by boat from San Francisco. Driving in, follow Bridgeway to the El Portal turnoff near Plaza Vina del Mar; on-site parking and valet are both available for guests. Check-in starts at 3 p.m., and one thing worth knowing ahead of time — guests must be at least 21 years old to book a room here.

What's Nearby

You're a minute's walk from Bridgeway's galleries and restaurants, and the ferry to San Francisco leaves practically at the front door.

Our Take

Book a room here specifically for the deck at sunset — watching the fog roll through the Golden Gate from a chair over the water is worth the premium this hotel charges over its neighbors. The largest room, the Founder's Spa Suite, is named for William McDevitt, who started the place; it's less about the room itself and entirely about what's outside the sliding door.
