Cavallo Point — The Lodge at the Golden Gate

Cavallo Point sits inside Fort Baker, a decommissioned Army post tucked directly under the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge — technically part of Sausalito's address but a genuinely different setting from Bridgeway's shops and restaurants. The fort's 24 buildings went up between 1901 and 1915, stayed an active Army post through World War II and the Cold War, and didn't fully transfer to the National Park Service until 2002; the whole complex has been a National Register Historic District since 1973. Historic officers' quarters share the grounds with a newer, LEED Gold-certified contemporary wing across 142 rooms and suites total. It's the closest thing Sausalito has to a full resort, and the only hotel in town carrying a Michelin Guide 'Two Key' distinction, awarded in both 2024 and 2025.
Rooms & Amenities
Historic Lodging rooms occupy the restored 1910s officers' quarters, with wood floors, fireplaces, and a more traditional layout; Contemporary Lodging is newer construction with clean-lined interiors and better views toward the bridge and bay. The Healing Arts Center & Spa runs a meditation pool, infrared sauna, and Zen garden alongside outdoor jacuzzis, firepits, and the usual treatment rooms — it's large enough to be a full afternoon on its own. The cooking school runs hands-on classes most days, and a small retail shop called the Mercantile stocks well-made local goods worth a look even if you're not staying the night. A 24-hour fitness center, a fleet of vintage electric bikes, and complimentary EV charging round things out.
Getting There
Fort Baker has its own exit directly off Highway 101 just north of the Golden Gate Bridge — Alexander Avenue, then follow signs into the fort — so you don't actually pass through downtown Sausalito to reach it. That's worth knowing if you were picturing a stroll along Bridgeway from your room; it's about a ten-minute drive or a longer walk along the bike path into town.
What's Nearby
The bridge itself is essentially next door — a short walk or ride up to the vista point — and the fort connects directly to the Bay Trail bike path if you want to pedal into downtown Sausalito or across the bridge into the city. A Wednesday-through-Sunday shuttle also runs guests to Rodeo Beach and the Sausalito Ferry Terminal if you'd rather not drive.

Book here for the setting, not the convenience — you're trading a walk to dinner in town for a room with the Golden Gate Bridge practically overhead. It's the pick for an anniversary or a splurge weekend rather than a base for hopping between Bridgeway shops on foot. Farley and Sula, the two restaurants on-site, are good enough that you may not mind staying put — and if you're traveling with a dog, the one-time pet fee comes with an actual in-room amenity kit, not just permission to bring them.
