A waterfront park north of downtown with a big lawn, a gazebo, bocce and sand volleyball courts, and direct bay access for kayaks and paddleboards. It's the closest thing Sausalito has to a town green, and it's dog-friendly. The land was Sausalito's informal town dump before voters approved a $560,000 bond to buy it, and volunteers built the first version of the park, after a developer's plan for a large apartment complex on the site set off a wave of local opposition, which opened in 1972. The city bought two adjacent parcels in 2003 and expanded the park in the 2018 to 2021 rebuild.
What To Expect
A years-long city redevelopment, finished in 2020 and 2021, left the park with a gazebo, three bocce courts with oyster-shell surfaces, a sand volleyball court, a launch area for small hand-carried boats, and a tiny beach that shows up at low tide. A farmers market runs in the parking lot every Sunday, typically 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the city's annual Chili Cook-Off takes over the park each September. The gazebo is a favorite wedding and photo backdrop and can be rented through the city's Parks and Recreation Department. The floating clubhouse-style building behind the gazebo belongs to the Sausalito Cruising Club, not the park.
Getting There
On Bridgeway at 1600, between Napa and Litho Streets, north of the downtown strip and near the southern edge of the old Marinship yards. It's within walking distance of the ferry landing if you don't mind a longer stroll along the water. There's a free parking lot on site, a rarity close to the water in Sausalito, though it turns into market space on Sunday mornings.
Good To Know
Open daily, free, with public restrooms and a drinking fountain. Bring your own kayak or paddleboard if you're launching here, since the launch area is meant for small boats you carry down yourself. This isn't a rental spot; that's Sea Trek at Schoonmaker Point Beach a bit further north. Note the parking lot closes to cars during the Sunday farmers market, so plan to park on the street or arrive on foot. Hours at the market shift with the seasons, so check before you plan a winter visit around it.
Our Take
Bring a picnic and skip the restaurant crowds. Grab something at the Sunday market, claim a patch of lawn facing the water, and watch the sailboats. It's a calm place to sit, and the dog can come along. From here the Bay Model and Marinship Way are a short trip north, so the park works as the middle stop in a slow afternoon along the northern waterfront.
