Sea Trek is Sausalito's main kayak and stand-up-paddleboard outfitter, launching from a dock beside the Bay Model Visitor Center on Richardson Bay. The fleet covers stable sit-on-top kayaks that suit first-timers, doubles for couples or a parent and child, stand-up paddleboards, and fast surfskis for people who already paddle. Every rental includes a paddle and life jacket, and the jacket stays on whenever you're on the water. If you'd rather not navigate solo, Sea Trek also runs guided tours from the same dock. The Houseboats and Nature tour takes about 2.5 hours in stable double kayaks, and evening paddles like the Full Moon tour run around three hours. Guided trips generally require riders to be 14 or older, so call ahead if you're bringing younger kids.
What To Expect
Sea Trek is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the fall season, which runs September 1 to October 31, and hours shift with the seasons after that, so check the schedule before you drive over. The shop is closed on October 17 for its annual regatta. Walk-ins are welcome, but summer weekends and sunny afternoons fill up, and reserving online saves you a wait on the dock. Rentals are billed with a one-hour minimum, then prorated every 15 minutes, and cancellations carry no charge. You're expected to stay inside Richardson Bay and not paddle past downtown Sausalito, which keeps you in the calm water anyway. Surfskis are tippy, so expect to demonstrate self-rescue or take a short class first. Mornings are usually glassy. Wind builds in the afternoon, and a gusty day can turn an easy paddle into a workout. Wear quick-drying clothes and shoes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen and a layer, because the bay is colder than the shore looks.
Getting There
Sea Trek sits at 2100 Bridgeway, next to the Bay Model, about a mile north of the ferry landing. You can walk it in 20 to 25 minutes along the waterfront path, which is a pleasant stroll on a clear day, or ride a rental bike from downtown. Driving is easiest if you're heading to the water with a bag of gear, and there's parking on site. Check the lot on busy weekends, since the Bay Model draws its own crowd. The ferry from San Francisco lands downtown, so pair it with a bike or a short rideshare if you're coming without a car.
