Sausalito Historical Society was formed in 1975 to preserve local artifacts, art forms and media information about our colorful Sausalito-area during all past eras. This non-profit organization works hard to archive the photographs, printed materials and documents that offer high-quality opportunities for public reading, research campaigns and local history-oriented academic projects. Community members are invited to enjoy Sausalito histories.

Among the San Francisco Bay communities, many types of historic preservation clubs and organizations were formed between 1965 and 1980 as lands were cleared and older buildings were demolished to make way for modern housing. During this time, local newspapers and reporting sources told of constant historic finds being unearthed as Marin County communities worked on accommodating an increased number of families.
Originally, Sausalito and other nearby communities were home to Miwok Indians. As land was cleared for new buildings, artifacts found from these tribes were collected and sent to the historical society that later founded the Marin Indian Museum. Other artifacts from the World Wars and daily life within communities were left in the care of local history preservation clubs and societies. Sausalito Historical Society has special treasures.

Phil Frank History Research Room & Exhibits: The famous cartoonist Phil Frank (1943-2007) lived on a houseboat in Sausalito. Phil Frank is best known for his Farley comic strip and lesser known for his artwork on the Elderberries comics by Joe Troise. The Phil Frank history research room and exhibits in Sausalito are available to the public, two days each week, on the top floor of the Sausalito Civic Center.

Downtown Sausalito Ice House: Across the street from the popular Poggio Restaurant, the old Sausalito Ice House has been converted into an exhibit area and community stop-in visitor center. This facility offers interesting books, helpful maps and local artistic offerings for sale during all months of the year. It is possible to find guides and directions for local history-oriented walking tours and sightseeing excursions.

Sausalito Bay Model: World War II Exhibit When a World War II ship building facility was built along the shores of Richardson Bay, the life-path of pre-war Sausalito was changed forever. An exciting history display that is devoted to Sausalito during the war years is available to the public, free, inside of the Bay Model building. The Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model facility is located at 2100 Bridgeway, near the waterfront.
