The excitement in Sausalito and around the San Francisco Bay Area has been building for some time around the negotiations and securing of the event in the San Francisco Bay. Sausalito residents will have a front row seat for the two-week event in September of 2013 and plans are under way around the Bay Area for the influx of crowds and what promises to be an exciting event!
Front Row in Sausalito
The best-of-nine series will take place September 7-22, 2013 in the San Francisco Bay and the regatta’s proposed route will bring vessels right along the waterfront in Sausalito giving residents and visitors to the area a front-row view of the action. While the defense match of the Cup itself will be held in September 2013, there are many other events that started in August of 2011 leading up to it. The preliminary events will be held around the world in a variety of locales with the America’s Cup Challenger and Defender Selection series taking place in July and August of 2013.
San Francisco – Home of the America’s Cup 2013
Announced in December of 2010, the waterfront area in San Francisco will be the home of the event in 2013. San Francisco had long lobbied and been in talks with race organizers and expressed their fervent desire to hold the event in the bay. After months of negotiation and consideration, the event committee announced that the city and the event had at last come to terms and made arrangements.
Renovation and new construction will be taking place over the next two years to build a new marina area that will serve as home to the race and improve existing waterfront properties along the bay.
Introducing the Fastest Boat in the World
Also a main draw and new feature at the 34th America’s Cup will be the new AC72 catamaran design, dubbed “the fastest boat in the world”. A 72 foot catamaran with a revolutionary design, the new boat will once again define the future of racing as the America’s Cup has done for years. The catamaran will race through the course and amaze and entertain spectators with its frame in the air as it passes under the Golden Gate Bridge and near the waterfronts in both San Francisco and Sausalito.
America’s Cup Details
The 34th America’s Cup returns to San Francisco for the first time in 18 years with new boats, a new racing format, and exciting new media coverage to give spectators more in depth coverage than they have ever witnessed before. The America’s cup series will be held worldwide throughout the 2011-2013 seasons with the finals being held in San Francisco (and very visible from Sausalito) September 7-22, 2013.
